Hunt was born in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. In 1874, at age 17, he migrated to Essex County for a training opportunity in a mercantile store of his uncle’s son-in-law, Mr. Julian Clarkson. After marrying, the water beckoned and he and his father-in-law, C.P. Garrett built the oyster house at Bowler’s wharf.
